Wix Hreflang: Multilingual SEO Without Guesswork

When Wix hreflang matters, how Wix Multilingual adds hreflang and x-default by default, URL structure choices, and mistakes that create language confusion.

Wix hreflang matters when you run real language or regional versions of the same site. It helps search engines serve the right language URL. If you publish only one language, you do not need a hreflang project. If you publish several, use Wix Multilingual, verify indexing per language, and leave the automatic hreflang tags alone unless documentation says otherwise.

Wix Multilingual SEO: Optimizing SEO settings for multilingual sites. Setup: Adding and setting up Wix Multilingual. URL structure: Editing your multilingual site's URL structure. Indexing basics: Wix Google indexing. Canonicals (different job): Wix canonical URL.

When hreflang matters

  • You sell in multiple languages with dedicated URLs
  • Country sites share products but differ by locale
  • Google is showing the wrong language version in a market

How Wix Multilingual handles hreflang

By default, Wix adds hreflang and x-default tags to multilingual pages. Most owners should not manually edit those tags. Your job is complete translations, consistent offers, per-language titles and descriptions, and making sure each language page that should rank is indexable.

  1. Add languages in Multilingual and finish primary templates.
  2. Translate product and checkout-critical strings, not only the homepage.
  3. In each language, set SEO title, meta description, and URL slug where editable in SEO basics.
  4. Keep Let search engines index this page enabled for languages you want ranked.
  5. Use Search Console to watch which language URLs get impressions.

SEO Assistant may flag multilingual or hreflang-related tasks on multilingual pages (SEO Assistant). Treat those as prompts to check Multilingual setup and index settings, not as a reason to hand-edit hreflang markup.

UI labels and automation details can change. Prefer current Wix Multilingual documentation when configuring production sites.

Multilingual URL structure

Wix supports three site-level URL structures for language versions:

  • Subdirectories (default): example.com/fr - recommended for most new multilingual sites; language versions share the same domain
  • Subdomains: fr.example.com - treated more like separate sites for SEO; needs Premium or Studio and supported DNS connection methods
  • Language parameters: example.com/?lang=fr - Google discourages this pattern because versions can look like duplicates

If you already use subdirectories, Wix recommends keeping them. If you use language parameters, Wix recommends changing structure. Changing structure triggers automatic redirects but can temporarily affect discoverability. Confirm live steps in Wix's URL structure Help.

Per page, Wix Multilingual SEO settings also let you localize the URL slug for a secondary language (with an automatic redirect from the old slug when you publish). Titles and descriptions should be localized too. Confirm the live editor SEO basics panel for your language.

What to verify

  • Each language version returns the correct content
  • Important language URLs are indexable (not accidentally noindexed)
  • Internal links point users to the matching language
  • Currency, shipping, and legal copy match the market
  • Site URL structure matches your SEO plan (prefer subdirectories when starting fresh)

Noindex accidents: Wix noindex.

Mistakes

  • Machine-translating product specs without review
  • Accidentally noindexing language versions that should be indexed
  • Mixing hreflang theory with canonical mistakes
  • Hand-editing hreflang when Wix already injects tags
  • Staying on language-parameter URLs when a subdirectory structure is available
  • Assuming hreflang creates demand in a new country

When you do not need hreflang work

  • Single-language catalog
  • A language switcher that does not publish real translated URLs
  • You only wanted geo IP popups, not language SEO
  • You expected a speed or chat app to configure hreflang

FAQ

What is hreflang on Wix?+

Hreflang annotations help search engines understand language and regional versions of a page. On Wix Multilingual sites, Wix adds hreflang and x-default tags by default. Most store owners should not hand-edit hreflang tags.

Do I need hreflang for a single-language Wix store?+

Usually no. Hreflang matters when you publish real language or country variants. A single English store does not need a hreflang project.

Can hreflang fix poor translations?+

No. Bad translations still rank poorly with the wrong audience. Fix language quality and local offer details first.

Does Speed Booster set hreflang?+

No. Multilingual SEO is a content and localization settings job.

Does SEO Assistant mean I must edit hreflang manually?+

No. SEO Assistant may surface multilingual or hreflang checks. The normal fix is configuring Wix Multilingual, per-language SEO settings, and indexability - not hand-editing tags unless Wix directs you to.
